MELISSA HOLBROOK PIERSON
Melissa Holbrook Pierson is a writer living in the Catskills region of New York, which acts as a launching place for her frequent travels, often by motorcycle. She’s the author of five books. Two concern motorcycling, including The Perfect Vehicle, and one—The Place You Love Is Gone—examines the emotional effects of loss of the places we call home. She is drawn most insistently to subjects that live in the nexus of history, psychology, sensory processing, and beauty. Which is sometimes not beautiful at all. “Memory City” is a bittersweet recollection of what it was like to come of age in the magical city that is New York, which seems to lay down memories in the cellular network like no other place, only to have those memories dislodged by change. Over and over, to generation after generation. Memory City by Melissa Holbrook Pierson first appeared in Hinterland Issue 4 Winter 2020 / hinterlandnonfiction.com
